Diplomacy Across Borders. Ideas Across Perspectives.

Asia-Pacific Cooperation Assembly (APCA) Model United Nations brings together high school students from across the world to debate global issues, represent diverse perspectives, and work toward practical solutions through diplomacy.

APCA MUN is designed as an international conference. Delegates engage with students beyond their own schools and countries, while university students and experienced young leaders contribute to the conference as Secretariat members, committee leaders, and judges.

Through both in-person and online committees, APCA MUN makes international participation possible even when delegates are separated by geography.

ABOUT APCA MUN

A Model UN Built Around International Interaction

Model United Nations is most valuable when delegates encounter perspectives that are different from their own.

APCA MUN was created around that idea.

Our conferences bring together students representing different schools, countries, educational systems, and cultural backgrounds. Delegates are asked not only to research global issues but also to negotiate with peers whose assumptions, experiences, and priorities may be very different from their own.

Each committee requires students to move beyond prepared speeches. Delegates must respond to changing discussions, build coalitions, negotiate wording, defend national interests, and find areas of agreement.

The result is a conference built around active diplomacy rather than scripted debate.

Policy research and country representation

Delegates study the position, interests, and priorities of the country or organization they represent before entering committee.

Formal debate

Students present arguments, respond to other delegations, introduce proposals, and defend policy positions.

Negotiation and coalition building

Much of diplomacy happens outside formal speeches. Delegates must identify potential partners, reconcile competing priorities, and build enough support to move proposals forward.

APCA MUN

AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE FORMAT

A hybrid structure allows APCA MUN to build a broader international delegate community than would be possible through a purely local conference.

In-Person and Online Committees

APCA MUN is structured to allow students to participate regardless of whether they can travel to the host location.

In-person committees

In-person committees provide the full conference environment of face-to-face debate, caucusing, negotiation, and resolution writing.

Online committees

Online committees allow international delegates to participate remotely from their own countries while still engaging in structured committee debate and diplomacy.

The online component is not intended simply as a livestream of the physical conference. Online delegates participate in dedicated committee sessions designed for active discussion, negotiation, and decision-making.

FOR DELEGATES

APCA MUN challenges delegates to develop several skills simultaneously.

A strong delegate must be able to:

Research an unfamiliar country and issue;

Understand competing political and economic interests;

Speak clearly under time pressure;

Listen carefully to opposing positions;

Respond without relying on a prepared script;

Negotiate with other delegates;

Write precise policy language;

Build coalitions;

Make compromises without abandoning the interests they represent.

For experienced MUN delegates, APCA MUN provides an opportunity to test those skills in a more internationally diverse environment.

For newer delegates, the conference provides an accessible way to begin developing them.

INTERNATIONAL SECRETARIAT

APCA MUN is supported by an international Secretariat that includes university and high school student leaders from multiple countries.

Secretariat members contribute to conference planning, committee preparation, delegate coordination, academic standards, and event operations.

The inclusion of university students gives high school delegates the opportunity to interact with young people who have already moved into more advanced academic environments and fields of study.

At the same time, APCA MUN remains fundamentally student-driven. Young organizers are given meaningful responsibility for building and delivering an international academic event.

JUDGES AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT

APCA MUN invites university students and other qualified young academics from different countries to contribute as judges, committee leaders, and conference advisers.

Rather than evaluating delegates only on speaking style, APCA MUN encourages attention to the full range of skills required in Model United Nations, including:

Quality of research;

Understanding of national position;

Substance of arguments;

Responsiveness during debate;

Diplomatic judgment;

Coalition building;

Resolution writing;

Constructive participation in committee.

This helps ensure that recognition is based on meaningful performance throughout the conference rather than simply on who speaks the most often.

GLOBAL PARTICIPATION

One Conference, Multiple Countries

APCA MUN is designed to grow as a continuing international platform.

Each conference seeks participation from students, schools, university volunteers, and young leaders from multiple countries.

This international structure allows a committee discussion to include perspectives shaped by different educational systems and national environments.

A question involving trade, migration, security, technology, climate policy, development, or human rights can look very different depending on where a student lives.

APCA MUN gives students a place to encounter those differences directly.

COMMITTEES

APCA MUN committees are selected to address issues that require genuine negotiation among countries and institutions.

Depending on the conference, committees may include bodies connected to areas such as:

International security;

Economic development and trade;

Human rights;

Public health;

Environment and climate;

Technology and artificial intelligence;

Migration and humanitarian affairs;

Education;

Regional cooperation;

Emerging global challenges.

Each committee is supported by a topic guide designed to help delegates understand the issue, relevant institutions, major areas of disagreement, and questions that should guide their research.

WHY APCA MUN?

Many students learn about international affairs through textbooks, articles, or classroom discussion.

Model United Nations requires something different.

A delegate may personally support one policy but be required to argue another because it reflects the position of the country being represented.

A student may enter committee convinced that one solution is obvious, only to discover that another delegation faces completely different political, economic, or security constraints.

That experience teaches an important lesson: international problems rarely have solutions that satisfy everyone.

Diplomacy therefore requires more than having good ideas. It requires understanding interests, communicating across differences, finding workable compromises, and deciding what progress is realistically possible.

Those are the skills APCA MUN is designed to develop.

BEYOND THE CONFERENCE

APCA MUN is intended to create connections that continue beyond a single conference.

Delegates may meet students from countries they have never visited.

Secretariat members collaborate with peers at universities and schools in different parts of the world.

Committee discussions can lead to future research, writing, student initiatives, academic collaboration, and continued participation in international affairs.

For some students, APCA MUN may be their first experience participating in an international academic conference.

For others, it may become one step toward future study or careers in areas such as international relations, economics, law, public policy, business, diplomacy, journalism, or global development.
